The bathroom is the room that gets dirty fastest and takes the most effort to deep clean. In NYC apartments, you're dealing with limited ventilation, hard water, old fixtures, and often decades-old grout. Here's the complete deep cleaning approach.
Start With the Shower/Tub
This is the hardest part, so tackle it first while you have energy:
- ✓Spray the entire shower with your cleaning solution and let it sit for 10 minutes
- ✓Scrub tile grout with a stiff brush — baking soda paste works best on stained grout
- ✓Clean the showerhead by soaking it in a bag of white vinegar for an hour (tie it on with a rubber band)
- ✓Scrub the tub basin — for porcelain, use baking soda; for acrylic, use a non-abrasive cleaner
- ✓Clean the glass door or shower curtain (wash curtains in the washing machine with vinegar)
- ✓Check and clean the drain — pull out the hair catcher and clear any buildup
The Toilet (Yes, All of It)
Most people clean the bowl and call it done. A deep clean means:
- ✓Bowl — apply toilet cleaner under the rim, let it sit, then scrub
- ✓Seat — both sides, including the hinges
- ✓Exterior — wipe down the entire outside of the toilet
- ✓Base — where it meets the floor is where the most bacteria lives
- ✓Behind the toilet — the wall and floor back there need attention
- ✓Tank — lift the lid and check for mold or mineral buildup
Sink and Vanity
Clean the sink basin with an all-purpose cleaner, then polish the faucet with a dry cloth. Don't forget the drain — pour baking soda followed by vinegar to clear buildup and odors. Wipe down the vanity top, mirror (vinegar + water is streak-free), and organize anything under the sink.
The Floor and Finishing Touches
Sweep or vacuum first, then mop with a disinfecting solution. Pay special attention to the area around the toilet base and behind the door. Wipe down the bathroom fan cover (dust it with a dry cloth), the door handle, light switch, and towel bars. Replace your bath mat if it's seen better days — they harbor bacteria and mold faster than anything else in the bathroom. Our deep cleaning service covers every step on this list.
