Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products That Are Actually Safe for Kids and Pets

What we use, what we avoid, and why "green" on the label doesn't always mean safe.

Here's something the cleaning industry doesn't talk about enough: a lot of "green" products aren't actually safe for kids or pets. The word "natural" is unregulated — anyone can slap it on a label. We've done the research so you don't have to.

What We Actually Use

After years of testing, these are the products our team trusts:

  • White vinegar + water for glass, mirrors, and general surfaces
  • Castile soap (Dr. Bronner's) diluted for mopping and all-purpose cleaning
  • Baking soda for scrubbing, deodorizing, and gentle abrasion
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%) for disinfecting and whitening
  • Microfiber cloths — they clean effectively with just water
  • Enzyme cleaners for biological stains and pet messes

What to Avoid

Even "eco-friendly" brands can contain ingredients that are harmful to small children and animals:

  • Essential oils — tea tree, eucalyptus, and peppermint are toxic to cats. Citrus oils irritate dogs
  • Phenol-based disinfectants (Lysol, Pine-Sol) — highly toxic to cats
  • Ammonia — irritates respiratory systems for everyone, especially small lungs
  • Bleach — effective disinfectant but dangerous if not properly diluted and rinsed
  • Fragranced products — "fragrance" is a catchall for dozens of undisclosed chemicals

The DIY All-Purpose Cleaner That Works

Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup water, 1 cup white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of castile soap. That's it. It cleans counters, stovetops, bathroom surfaces, and most hard surfaces. It won't work on hardwood floors (vinegar is too acidic) or natural stone (same reason), but for everything else, it's genuinely all you need.

For floors, just castile soap diluted in warm water. A tablespoon per gallon. Your floors will be clean, your kids can crawl on them, and your cat won't get sick licking its paws. If you prefer to leave it to the pros, our team uses safe, vetted products on every job.
