NYC radiators are the most neglected part of every apartment. They sit there all winter pumping out heat, and all summer collecting dust, dead bugs, and whatever else drifts behind your furniture. When heating season starts and you smell that burnt dust smell? That's your radiator cooking months of buildup.
What You Need
Cleaning a radiator is easier than you'd think:
- ✓A radiator brush (long, thin brush — about $8 online)
- ✓Vacuum with a crevice attachment
- ✓Damp microfiber cloths
- ✓An old towel or sheet to catch falling dust
- ✓Warm soapy water for the exterior
The Process
Lay a towel under the radiator. Use the radiator brush to push dust down through the fins — it'll fall onto the towel. Then vacuum between the fins with the crevice attachment. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and warm soapy water.
For radiator covers, remove them if possible and vacuum the inside. Wipe the cover with a damp cloth. If they're painted and chipping, that's a landlord issue — don't try to repaint them yourself.
Why It Actually Matters
Dirty radiators are less efficient. Dust acts as insulation between the radiator and the air, meaning you're paying the same heating bill but getting less heat. A clean radiator heats your apartment faster and more evenly. Plus, all that dust circulates through your air every time the heat kicks on. If you have allergies or asthma, clean radiators make a noticeable difference.
We recommend cleaning radiators at least twice a year — once before heating season starts and once when it ends. A deep cleaning service includes radiators as part of the standard checklist. Your lungs (and your heating bill) will thank you.
