Post-Renovation Cleaning: Why DIY Isn't Enough

Construction dust is finer than you think, more pervasive than you expect, and worse for your health than you realize.

Your renovation is done. The new kitchen looks amazing. And there's a fine layer of white dust on literally everything you own, including inside your drawers, on top of your books, and somehow inside your refrigerator. Welcome to post-renovation cleaning.

Why It's Not a Normal Cleaning Job

Construction dust isn't regular dust. It's a mix of drywall powder, plaster, concrete dust, and potentially silica particles — all of which are much finer than household dust. A regular vacuum cleaner doesn't have a fine enough filter to capture it. You'll vacuum, the apartment will look clean, and 24 hours later there's another layer of dust because you just redistributed it.

This dust also gets into your HVAC system, behind outlet covers, inside light fixtures, and in every crack and crevice. It takes professional equipment and technique to actually remove it.

The Post-Renovation Cleaning Process

A proper post-renovation deep clean takes 6–10 hours for a typical NYC apartment and involves:

  • HEPA vacuuming all surfaces (HEPA filters capture particles regular vacuums miss)
  • Wiping down every surface — walls, ceilings, moldings, door frames
  • Cleaning inside all cabinets, closets, and drawers
  • Washing windows, sills, and tracks
  • Scrubbing all bathroom and kitchen surfaces
  • Cleaning all light fixtures and outlets
  • Mopping floors multiple times (dust keeps resettling)
  • Final detail pass 24 hours later for residual dust

Health Considerations

Concrete and drywall dust can cause respiratory irritation, especially in children and people with asthma. Silica dust from certain construction materials is a genuine health hazard. This isn't about aesthetics — it's about making your apartment safe to breathe in again. If you renovated and have been coughing since, that's probably why.

When to Schedule It

Book your post-renovation cleaning for the day after your contractor finishes — but expect to do a second pass 2–3 days later. Dust continues to settle from the air for several days after construction ends. That second cleaning catches everything the first one couldn't.
