Every spring cleaning article on the internet is written for someone with a house in the suburbs. Four closets? A garage? A mudroom? Cool, I have a coat closet that doubles as my pantry. Here's a spring cleaning guide designed for actual NYC apartments.
Week 1: Purge and Declutter
You can't deep clean around a mountain of stuff. Spend the first week being ruthless:
- ✓Go through your closet — if you didn't wear it all winter, donate it
- ✓Check under the bed, behind the couch, and in that drawer everyone has
- ✓Expired pantry items (NYC apartments attract pests — don't give them a buffet)
- ✓Old mail, receipts, and paperwork that can be shredded
- ✓Bathroom products you haven't used in 6+ months
Week 2: Deep Clean Room by Room
Now that you can actually see your surfaces, go room by room:
- ✓Kitchen: Inside the oven, behind the fridge, scrub the stovetop, degrease cabinets, clean the garbage disposal
- ✓Bathroom: Re-caulk if needed, deep clean grout, descale the showerhead, organize under the sink
- ✓Bedroom: Flip or rotate the mattress, wash all bedding (including duvet), dust under the bed, clean window sills
- ✓Living Room: Move furniture and vacuum underneath, dust all shelves and electronics, clean windows inside
Week 3: The Forgotten Spots
These are the things nobody thinks about but make a huge difference:
- ✓Wipe all door handles, light switches, and cabinet pulls
- ✓Clean the top of the refrigerator (trust us)
- ✓Dust ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
- ✓Vacuum the couch cushions and under them
- ✓Wash curtains or blinds
- ✓Clean inside your washing machine (run empty hot cycle with vinegar)
- ✓Wipe down baseboards throughout the apartment
